The Velo guide

VELO, from 4mg to 17mg

How do you find your way round a brand with more than thirty cans on the shelf? With VELO, you begin with strength. The cans we stock run from 4mg a pouch up to 17mg, and the flavours take in cool mints, straight fruits, fruits with a fresh mint twinge and a few cans that do something different altogether. So we group VELO into three lines, Lower Strength, Regular Strength and Full Strength. Each one has a character of its own.

This page takes the three lines from lightest to strongest and names the flavours in each. It then covers who makes VELO, how the strengths sit on our scale, what's in the can and how to pick a flavour. Start here, then choose your line.

Velo Lower Strength cans
Light to Medium · 4 to 8mg a pouch

Lower Strength: 4mg to 8mg a pouch

Lower Strength is VELO at its lightest and, side by side with the other two lines, at its most varied. The 6mg cans sit in the light band on our scale. Arctic Grapefruit is grapefruit that's sweet, sour and bitter at once, with a touch of peppermint. Ruby Berry is red berries led by strawberry, Tropical Mango blends mango, mandarin and passion fruit, and Wintery Watermelon pairs watermelon with mint. Green Spearmint is a sweet mint with a cooling finish. Purple Grape comes at 4mg, the lightest can in the range, and again at 8mg.

The 8mg cans open the medium band. Blue Raspberry is a sweet blend of blueberry and raspberry, Smooth Papaya is papaya with ripe tropical notes, and Bright Spearmint is spearmint with a crisp, cooling finish. Lime Flame joins zesty lime to spicy jalapeno and belongs to VELO Sensations, where Flame stands for what VELO describes as a warming sensation. Then come the three VELO Shift cans, each a fruit that VELO describes as balanced with a warming sensation. Shift Hot Dragonfruit adds a hint of spice, Shift Hot Grape is sweet grape and Shift Hot Peach is sweet peach. If you only try one, make it Ruby Berry.

Velo Regular Strength cans
Medium · 10 to 10.9mg a pouch

Regular Strength: fifteen cans around 10mg

Regular Strength is the centre of the VELO shelf. Twelve cans are 10mg a pouch and three are 10.9mg, so the whole line sits in the medium band. The fruit Ice cans lead it, each a fruit with a fresh mint twinge. Blueberry Ice is blueberry, Strawberry Ice is strawberry, Peach Ice is juicy ripe peach and Mango Ice is tangy ripe mango. Cherry Ice adds fresh citrus to its cherry, and Tropical Ice blends pineapple, coconut, mango and papaya.

The mints come next. Crispy Peppermint is a simple peppermint with a cooling aftertaste, Polar Mint is an icy mint, and Freezing Peppermint at 10.9mg is peppermint with a cooling finish. Between mint and fruit sit Minty Lemon, a fusion of zesty lemon and peppermint, and Wintery Watermelon, juicy watermelon with peppermint. Zesty Elderflower sets elderflower against tart lime. Tropical Mango, at 10.9mg, is mango, mandarin and passion fruit. Two cans come from VELO Sensations. Mango Flame is ripe mango with what VELO describes as a warming sensation, and Orange Spark, at 10.9mg, is zesty orange with what VELO describes as a tingling sensation. If you want the fullest choice VELO offers, this is the line.

Velo Full Strength cans
Medium to Strong · 14 to 17mg a pouch

Full Strength: 14mg and 17mg

Full Strength is the short line at the top. Two cans are 14mg a pouch, which keeps them in the medium band on our scale. Polar Mint is an icy mint, the same flavour as the 10mg can in Regular Strength. Icy Berries is a blend of blueberry, raspberry and blackberry with a fresh mint lift.

The other two are 17mg, and they're the only VELO cans in our strong band. Freezing Peppermint is an icy peppermint with a cooling finish. Wintery Watermelon is juicy watermelon with peppermint, the same pairing found at 6mg and 10mg lower down. So a flavour you already like can follow you up the range. If you already use strong snus, start with Freezing Peppermint.

Who makes VELO

VELO belongs to BAT, British American Tobacco, which calls it the flagship brand of its modern oral range. The brand began in Sweden, and the maker says it's produced in Europe. In the UK it's sold and distributed by Nicoventures Retail (UK) Limited, a London company. Every VELO pouch is tobacco free, as the maker states.

VELO on our strength scale

VELO states its strength as milligrams of nicotine in each pouch, and that's the figure we show for every can. Our scale then sorts those figures into bands. Light is under 8mg a pouch. Medium runs from 8mg up to 16mg. Strong runs from 16mg up to 25mg, and extreme is 25mg and over.

The can and the pouch

VELO's standard pouch format is Slim, and the maker says a Slim can holds 20 pouches. It also makes a smaller, more compact format called Mini, and format and strength are set separately. So go by the format and the count printed on the can in your hand.

The VELO flavour families

Four families explain most of the shelf. The mints are the simplest, each cool or cooling in its own way: Crispy Peppermint, Freezing Peppermint, Bright Spearmint, Green Spearmint and Polar Mint. The fruit Ice cans are a fruit first with a fresh mint twinge on the finish, as in Peach Ice or Strawberry Ice. Minty Lemon, Wintery Watermelon and Icy Berries work in a similar way, pairing fruit with mint.

How to choose a VELO flavour

Choose the line first, by strength, then the flavour. If you like mint, every line has one, from Green Spearmint at 6mg to Freezing Peppermint at 17mg. If you like fruit on its own, look at Purple Grape, Smooth Papaya, Ruby Berry, Blue Raspberry and Tropical Mango. If you want fruit with a fresh mint twinge, the Ice cans in Regular Strength are the place.

FAQ

Questions about Velo

How strong is VELO snus?

It depends on the can. VELO on our shelf runs from 4mg a pouch to 17mg. Lower Strength covers 4mg to 8mg, Regular Strength covers 10mg to 10.9mg, and Full Strength covers 14mg and 17mg.

Which VELO is the strongest?

The 17mg cans, Freezing Peppermint and Wintery Watermelon in the Full Strength line. They're the only VELO cans in the strong band on our scale.

What does Ice mean on a VELO can?

When Ice follows a fruit, as in Mango Ice or Cherry Ice, it means that fruit with a fresh mint twinge. The fruit leads and the mint lifts the finish.

What do Flame and Spark mean?

Both belong to VELO Sensations. VELO describes Flame as a warming sensation and Spark as a tingling sensation, alongside the flavour named on the lid.

What is VELO Shift?

A VELO pouch with rounded edges, in a format the maker calls Comfort, sold in a hexagonal can. Hot in the name means the flavour is balanced with a warming sensation, as VELO describes it. Each Shift can holds 20 pouches.

How many pouches are in a can of VELO?

The maker says a Slim can holds 20 pouches, and Slim is VELO's standard format. VELO also makes a smaller Mini format, so check the count printed on your can.

Why does my can say WINTRY WATERMELON?

That's the name on the can. We list the flavour as Wintery Watermelon, and some cans print it as WINTRY WATERMELON. Under either spelling it's watermelon with mint.

What do the dots on a VELO lid mean?

The lid shows strength as a row of dots. For the exact figure, go by the mg a pouch stated for that can.
